When I asked mom to let me work at her Kumon center I was already prepared to face a summer of numbers, letters, and indecipherable handwriting on hundreds of worksheets that needed to be marked. I knew that I was to be surrounded by kids with personalities ranging from wild to unbelievably wild (aren’t I optimistic~). It was all good, until mom had one of her lightbulb moments.
I had to empty my mind of the inner peace it had left, because I wasn’t just going to sit next to children (with, I repeat, personalities ranging from wild to unbelievably wild), I was tasked to teach. Teach what? Math? Reading? Oh, no. Art.
Thankfully enough, I was not alone! Meet my co-workers (right to left): beauty queen ate Ten Reyes, artist and ate Ten’s brother Renz “hi kuya Renz” Reyes, and resident panda, ate A Yu. It started off with just me and ate Ten, and occasionally Renz, but some of the kids were… exceptionally hard to handle. Basically, the four of us were tasked to recreate Art Attack episodes four days a week, two different activities per two days.
We had the first two days easy. Less artsy, the activity was the film viewing of ‘Ramona and Beezus’. Let the kids sit down and focus on the screen, and after the movie, questions about what it was about were to be asked. Only, we weren’t able to ask since they all abruptly stood up and left when it finished, some not even bothering to wait till the end of the movie. When we did get a chance to ask, they loved the word “wala” (nothing). Raiko, one of our notorious kiddies, even mentioned “kasal” (wedding).
We sort of got the idea that it was not going to be the smoothest summer.
We moved on to other activities, this time with Renz and ate A.
Origami (children’s choice), drawing and coloring (my poor, abused, cap-less markers /cries),
Recycled pencil holders,
Punch art (we made that name up, since you’re supposed to make the circles using a puncher, haha!), and my favorite:
Puppet making!
Since we had to help most of the kids with everything, in a day each of us would have folded at least 10 paper fish, rolled enough magazine pages for 2 to 3 pencil holders, punched and glued a hundred of those tiny circles, and made at least 3 puppets for each of them kiddos. But despite all that hard work and my being pessimistic about the whole wild kid on the loose thing, most of them were actually really sweet. Every kid that sat down and listened to our instructions or called out our names (mostly Renz’ name though *jealous voice*) had wonderful, kid-spirit inside them. I would describe them as fireworks; for now, one spark for each kid. And I bet that in a short span of time they’d all grow up to be bright individuals, creating a firework of their own.
It ended all too soon, but we all have great memories to keep.
Good-bye, Kumon Summer! *cue tears*
